Nice Beach!

I’ve been away from San Pancho for a while. The remarkable thing to me is how our beach now looks. Just like it did about a year and a half ago. Before the ravaging rainstorms of September 2010.

A beautiful smooth beach, north and south, with no “shelfs”, and none of those crazy paths the rio was taking along the beach from time to time.

The beach is back! And we didn’t have to do a thing but wait. No human intervention. No fretting about loosing one of San Pancho’s most important assets. Nope. None of that. Just time.

The November high temperature was 88 F with most days in the 80 – 85 range. The low reached the upper 50s with most overnight low’s hovering around 70, until the end of the month when things cooled off a bit. Looking back at last year, the highs were comparable, but the over night low stayed above 60 all month long.

Only a trace of rain during the month. Last year we had just a little less than an inch. Here’s the grapg on this year’s rainy season:

And kudos here to Frank Smith, our erstwhile “Mr. Turtle” in San Pancho. In November Frank celebrated 20 years in town when he undertook the marine turtle program. Hats off to him and his volunteers (he needs more) for this wonderful enterprise we can all be proud of. Learn more about Grupo Ecologico De La Costa Verde online. San Pancho Weather Blog

October highlights… things you might not have noticed.

.

San Pancho experienced the lowest recorded pressure in the more than four years of records at the weather station: 29.53 inHg at 11:15 AM 10-Oct-2011. This was a couple of days before hurricane Jova made landfall. The annual average pressure in San Francisco, Nayarit has been 29.88

.

Only about a five degree variation in the daily high temperatures for the month, all hovering between 85 and 90!

The average temperature for the month was 81.5 F, not much change from the previous two years: 79.5, 81.23 (2010 and 2009 respectively), but higher than the 76.3 of October 2008.

The rainfall pattern for October is a bit more interesting as this is traditionally the “last” month of our rainy season here in San Pancho:

.

2011 – 2.81

2010 – 0.27 (on the heals of a record September rainfall)

2009 – 3.79

2008 – 0.22

.

You can decide on a pattern to these records. No rain in even-year Octobers?

.

While I personally didn’t get to enjoy this wonderful month of October in San Pancho, I’ve got some pictures of a two-foot snowfall I can show you from New England! Like this one of my Honda.

Jova Avoids San Pancho

Hurricane Jova came ashore far south of San Pancho last week. Sadly, at least six lives were lost in the Cat 2 Hurricane that quickly had the punch taken out of it by the Sierras.

The good news is that Jova turned out to be a non-event for San Francisco, Nayarit, Mexico. I happened to be out of town for this storm.

A friend of mine who was there summed it up well, “The wait was intense and everyone did a lot of pre-prep, all for naught.”

Better to prepare than be unaware when it comes to tropical storms!

The October 12th event brought us about an inch of rain and some wind gusts, but no big surf or other severe weather events to report.

The San Pancho Weather Station received a lot of traffic this week, from Mexican, U.S. and Canadian viewers. And those folks used our links to the NOAA sites which provide such great detailed information. It’s great that the U.S. Weather Service provides tracking information for storms well beyond the landmass of the contiguous 48 states.

It has been nearly a decade since San Pancho has been significantly affected by a Pacific hurricane. Our luck has held out once again.
