Let The Rains Begin!

I think it is time to declare this the beginning of the rainy season for 2010.

True, we did have about 4/10 of an inch from those light showers June 17 – 19. But it wasn’t a significant rainfall.

To review:

June 17 2009 we had .67 of an inch.  (Not much of a start, either.)
June 7 – 11 2008 we had an inch in a storm over several days.
June 9 – 15 2007 we had a little less than an inch in six days.

But the first significant rainfall arrived early today -the 25th-the latest we have had a substantial rainfall in June in recent years. And the storm came packaged with some spectacular thunder and lightening, much to Oro’s (our mascota) dismay.

This morning’s storm lasted from 1:30 til 4:00 a.m., with a total accumulation of 1.24 inches.  While it rained for that time period, most of it fell between 1:30 and 2:30.  The highest rain rate (the number of inches per hour is the measurement here) came at 2:00 a.m. when it was falling at the rate of nearly 5 inches per hour!  Fortunately for only a few minutes!

So there you are.  We’ve started the rainy season later than usual. Last year we had 7.28 inches in June, 4.69 inches in June 2008, and 1.47 in June 2007. So we’ve got some catching up to do if we are to come close to the past two years June rainfall. Let’s see what happens in the next week!
