Springtime in San Pancho

It finally happened about the middle of March! “It” was warmer weather after a very chilly and unusually cool first two months of the year.

Sorta.

If you’ve been in San Pancho since the beginning of 2011, March weather sure felt like it had warmed up a bit from January and February. And it had.

The March 2011 average temperature (the average of all the readings from every hour for every day for 31 days) was 68 F (19.5 C). Better than February’s 64 or January’s 65.

But this was still the coldest March since 2008 when it was also 68 (20.1). By comparison, last March averaged 72 F and in ’09 it was 76 F! So why did we think we were back to “normal”? Dunno, except to say that 68 felt a heck of lot better than 64 or 65.

And it could be that the breezes coming into San Pancho from off the Pacific got slightly warmer as the sea temperatures began to moderate. And we did indeed have daytime high temperatures at 75 F or higher since the middle of March. while the night-time lows hovered around 60 F all month long.

In any case, the jungle is looking greener, the primavera trees and flowering plants are showing their spring best and the trend of the past few days is staying in the upper 70s. The solar and UV numbers are rising, as the Heat Index just begins to move slightly above the actual temperature readings.

I got into a discussion with a friend recently about when we should expect the first rain here on the Riviera Nayarit. While I didn’t convince my friend, I can flatly state here that in the past it doesn’t show till June. And sometimes not much even in the sixth month of the year.

The San Pancho Weather Station records show no rain in recent years in May, except for a trace (.2 inches) on May 20, 2009.

The June records indicate that we had a decent rainfall of 2.5 inches on June 20, 2009. Other years show June with only traces of precipitation. Except for 2010.

Rainfall in June 2009 was 7.3 inches, compared to 4.7 inches in June 2008.

And then there was last year, the year of THE rain. None in May. And only 1.6 inches in June! And then 7 inches in July. And 13 inches in August. And… but that’s another story for another blog.

When it comes to rainfall for May and June rain in San Pancho, let’s first see if past records are any indication of future performance . Hmmm… that sounds like the cautionary footnote on my mutual fund statement.
